Europa Nostra

Europa Nostra is the leading pan-European heritage organisation with members from 50 countries. It represents non-governmental players actively engaged in protecting Europe’s cultural and natural heritage. Its large network of members is comprised of: 250 heritage NGO’s, representing 5 million people; 150 public and private organisations; and 1500 individuals.

Founded in 1963 in Paris, it is headquartered in The Hague and has an office in Brussels. Plácido Domingo, the world-renowned opera singer, is the President of the organisation.

PRIX

Europa Nostra celebrates excellence through its Awards Scheme run in partnership with the European Commission. The EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards, which has been conferred since 2002, is Europe's most prestigious heritage awards scheme.

LOBBY

Europa Nostra seeks to influence European and national policies related to heritage. Upon its instigation, the Treaty of Lisbon (2009) has introduced in its article 3.3. that one of the aims of the Union is “to ensure that Europe's cultural heritage is safeguarded and enhanced”. The organisation was the initiator and is the coordinator of the European Heritage Alliance 3.3 (2011), which brings together 33 European heritage networks.

DANGER

Europa Nostra campaigns to save Europe's endangered monuments, sites and landscapes. Through ‘The 7 Most Endangered’ programme, launched in partnership with the European Investment Bank Institute in 2013, it seeks to mobilise local, national and international public and private partners to save Europe’s most threatened heritage sites.

In 2013, Europa Nostra, the Voice of Cultural Heritage in Europe, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary.
