The 17th ASEF University AU17), themed “Cultural Heritage: Challenges and Opportunities” brought together 41 students and young professionals from 31 ASEM countries. They stayed in Penang and for over 2 weeks, engaged in rigorous academic discourse, workshops and site visits.

AU17 participants produced a photo and video exhibition entitled “Shared Heritage: As we see it”, which showcased images that best represent what Shared Heritage means to them. The exhibition is envisaged to travel to several ASEM countries , and be presented alongside the 5th ASEM Culture Ministers’ Meeting in Yogyakarta in 2012.

With its capital, George Town (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008), Penang was a fitting environment for AU17. ASEF's partners, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Centre for Policy Research and International Studies (CenPRIS) are at the forefront of actively promoting heritage-related programmes, and working with renowned academics in the field.
