Over 230 Asian and European museum directors and professionals attended the 5th General Conference of the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) in Seoul, Korea (13-15 September 2012).
This bi-annual Conference focused on education and sustainability highlighting policies and strategies on Education for All – Museum and Communities and Technology and Museum Education.
‘Education is getting greater attention as an integral part of the museums,’ said Dr Kim Youngna, ASEMUS Chairperson and Director General, National Museum of Korea. ‘This Conference is a place where the National Museum of Korea works together with ASEMUS, to set the direction for the museums in Asia and Europe.’
The keynote speaker of the Conference, Mr Choe Kwang Shik, from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Korea), said: ‘As we enter into the era of aged society, age-friendly exhibition and education will be increasingly important. And I hope that ASEMUS member museums in Asia and Europe would take the lead in this’.
Mr Michael Koh, CEO, National Heritage Board, Singapore mentioned during his speech: ‘In recent times, the term ‘museum learning’ is seen as a process that brings new possibilities and opportunities in museum education.’
The conference is organised by the National Museum of Korea, ASEF, and supported by ASEMUS Secretariat and ICOM Korea (International Council of Museums).
ASEMUS connects and facilitates collaborations between museums and heritage institutions in the two regions in order to promote sharing of collections and heritage preservation. The Network membership is now close to 100 museum members.
