The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is pleased to invite you and representatives of your museum to the 5th General Conference of ASEMUS that will take place from September 13-15, 2012. The Conference is organised by the National Museum of Korea in partnership with ASEMUS under the theme of “New and Sustainable Museum Education”.

ASEMUS connects and facilitates collaborations between museums and heritage institutions in the two regions to promote sharing of collections and heritage preservation. The Network currently includes over 90 member museums. This year, its bi-annual General Conference will focus on education and sustainability.

Project Updates

  • Over 230 Asian and European museum directors and professionals attended the 5th General Conference of the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) in Seoul, Korea (13-15 September 2012).

    This bi-annual Conference focused on education and sustainability highlighting policies and strategies on Education for All – Museum and Communities and Technology and Museum Education.

    ‘Education is getting greater attention as an integral part of the museums,’ said Dr Kim Youngna, ASEMUS Chairperson and Director General, National Museum of Korea. ‘This Conference is a place where the National Museum of Korea works together with ASEMUS, to set the direction for the museums in Asia and Europe.’

    The keynote speaker of the Conference, Mr Choe Kwang Shik, from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Korea), said: ‘As we enter into the era of aged society, age-friendly exhibition and education will be increasingly important. And I hope that ASEMUS member museums in Asia and Europe would take the lead in this’. 

    Mr Michael Koh, CEO, National Heritage Board, Singapore mentioned during his speech: ‘In recent times, the term ‘museum learning’ is seen as a process that brings new possibilities and opportunities in museum education.’

     

    The conference is organised by the National Museum of Korea, ASEF, and supported by ASEMUS Secretariat and ICOM Korea (International Council of Museums).

    ASEMUS connects and facilitates collaborations between museums and heritage institutions in the two regions in order to promote sharing of collections and heritage preservation. The Network membership is now close to 100 museum members.

  • Over 230 museum directors and professionals from Asia and Europe attended the 5th General Conference of the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) in Seoul, Korea, from 13 to 15 September 2012.

    Keynote speeches Mr Choe Kwang Shik, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Korea), said in his congratulatory address, ‘In the future, museum will be expected to change into the audience-centred ones….This Conference will serve as a momentum for the museums in Asia and Europe to prepare for future in this ever-changing museum community’.

    Mr Michael Koh, CEO, National Heritage Board (Singapore), said during his keynote speech titled Museum based learning – Pride, Joy and Engagement, ‘learning is seen as a process and a journey in museum education/learning; bringing new possibilities and opportunities in museum education.’

    Dr Kim Youngna, ASEMUS Chairperson, Director General, National Museum of Korea said, ‘With rapid growth of museum attendance in recent years, the education is getting greater attentions as an integral part of the museums. In this regards, this Conference will be a place where the National Museum if Korea works together with ASEMUS, to set the direction for the museums in Asia and Europe.

  • Innovative heritage education programmes

    Over 50 museum directors and professionals from Asia and Europe will meet in Korea to develop innovative heritage education programmes. This will take place during the 5th General Conference of the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) in Seoul, Korea (13 - 15 September 2012).

    Participants will discuss the new ASEMUS Action Plan for the period 2012-2016. The topics will focus on designing creative public education programmes, using latest technological innovations and training of museum educators. Guest speakers include Mr Choe Kwang Shik, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Korea), Mr Michael Koh, CEO, National Heritage Board (Singapore), Professor Amareswar Galla, Director of International Institute for the Inclusive Museum (Denmark) and Professor Alexander Sedov, Director-General of the State Museum of Oriental Art (Russia).

    The Conference is organised by the National Museum of Korea and ASEF. It is supported by ICOM Korea (International Council of Museums).

  • Call for participation

    Conference participants will discuss the ASEMUS general agenda on the first day (13 Sept ), and the second day (14 Sept) will be focused on the following subjects that are in parallel with the theme of the Conference – ‘Creativity in Museum Education’, ‘Innovative Technologies for Museum Education’, ‘Education for All’, and ‘Training of Museum Educators’. The last day of the Conference (15 Sept) will be a day for cultural tours where the participants will visit museums and other cultural institutions while catching the beauty of autumn in Korea at no cost. The result of the Conference will form the basis of the new ASEMUS Action Plan for the period 2012-2016.

    Call for presentation

    We gladly welcome all papers and case studies for presentation related to the theme of the above Conference. Please send your abstract of around 250 words with a short biography to the ASEMUS Secretariat by 18 June 2012.There would be a possibility for funding three to five persons to present at the Conference.
