More than 60 participants from 21 ASEM member countries took part in this forum, including professors in communication and experts in information technology and the arts. The forum was held to develop co-operation among the ASEM members and to identify priority co-operation projects.
Singapore's Minister of State and Information and the Arts David Lim and Suvi Linden, Finland's Minister of Culture and Education, delivered lectures that explored the cultural implications of the Internet in Asia and Europe; the lectures helped participants to appreciate the potential and existing limits of new media.
The keynote speeches focused on four main topics:
- The status of cyberculture
- Cyberculture and globalisation
- Cyberculture and the formation of a new community
- Asia-Europe cultural exchange in the cyber age
At the close of the forum, participants adopted a Declaration on Cyberculture and agreed on nine recommendations, including the following:
- To create a database in Asia and Europe of different networks existing in the cultural sector
- To support exhibitions and distributed forms of public presentation, such as webcasts, for both existing art forms and art created specifically for the new media
