ASEF Roadschool - Practical Approaches to Cultural Policy in the Mekong Region

Project Period: Contact: Department: Programme: Theme:
14-15 August 2019 Preeti GAONKAR Culture Department ASEF Roadschool - Cultural Capacity Building Culture

Venue:
Phnom Penh, Cambodia

As part of ASEF Culture Department’s work in building capacity for young cultural professionals, ASEF partnered with Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) to develop a curriculum focussing on the practical approaches to cultural policy. This curriculum was implemented by CLA in their training session for young cultural practitioners from the Mekong region.

The participants of this workshop included active members from the arts and culture sector, both from civil society organisations as well as public institutions. The workshop followed a discussion-based format which introduced the basics of cultural policy and provided case studies for interactive engagement with the participants. The 2-day workshop enabled the participants to deepen their engagement with the area of cultural policy development.

The curriculum was developed by Ms Luckana KUNAVICHAYANONT, former Director of the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC) with inputs from peer trainers. The peer trainers included Ms Chanmaly PANYAPHONE from Laos, Mr Htoo Lwin MYO from Myanmar and Ms Nhung WALSH from Viet Nam. The customised curriculum was designed keeping the local context at the core. This curriculum will be adapted for future training sessions implemented by CLA.

With this initiative, ASEF acknowledges the increasing importance of regular “upskilling” for employability and professional growth in today’s rapidly changing workplaces. And with this curriculum, we aim to address the gap in knowledge and understanding of arts and cultural policies and trends; practical methodologies to engage with cultural policy; and, creative thinking and problem solving.
