The 14th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights was held on 18-20 November 2014 in Hanoi, Viet Nam, on the topic 'Human Rights and Businesses'.

With over 125 international representatives participating, the Seminar addressed the relationship between corporate responsibility and human rights protection within the ASEM framework and aims to develop recommendations to protect and strengthen human rights in relation to business activities.

Discussions took place in four closed-door Working Groups, each focusing on one of four topic areas:

WG1 – State Duty to Protect Human Rights Against Violations by Businesses

WG2 – Corporate Responsibility and its Contribution to Human Rights Implementation

WG3 – Monitoring, Reporting and Access to Remedies

WG4 – Multi-stakeholder cooperation

This seminar series is co-organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (nominated by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

ASEF has been the seminar secretariat since 2000.

The 14th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Viet Nam.  Given the nature of the Seminar, participants were invited individually by the co-organisers; there was no open call for participation.

  • Human Rights and Businesses

    The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is pleased to support the upcoming ASEAN Responsible Business Forum, which will take place on 27-29 October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Expected to bring together over 150 stakeholders from the public and private sectors as well as civil society members, the forum will promote responsible business practices in Asia, especially in the post-2015 ASEAN economic community. Topics of discussion will include sustainability of agricultural and extractive sectors, respect of human rights, anti-corruption initiatives and decent workplaces. One of the side-events of this forum will focus on “Implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights”.

    The forum is also an opportunity to present ASEF’s new publication onHuman Rights and Businesses, which is based on the recommendations and discussions from the 14th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights that took place in October 2014 in Viet Nam. Topics covered in this publication include the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and their application to ASEM members, particularly on state duty to protect human rights against violations by businesses; corporate responsibility and its contribution to human rights implementation; monitoring, reporting and access to remedies; and multi-stakeholder cooperation.

  • Human Rights and Business

    The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) will be organising a side-event at the 3rd UN Forum on Business and Human Rights on 3 December 2014 (11:30 am – 1:00 pm). The UN Forumwill take place on 1-3 December 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland.

     

    This side-event, Regional Implementationof the Guiding Principles:Lessons from Asia and Europe,is drawn from the discussions of the 14th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights: Human Rights and Businesses, which took place on 18-20 November 2014 in Hanoi, Viet Nam. 

     

    The objectives of the Geneva side-event are 2-fold. First, to provide the current state-of-play on the advances made across Asia and Europe to promote the UN Guiding Principles. Second, to exchange best practices for promoting multi-stakeholder cooperation on business and human rights, both within and between the two regions.

  • Human Rights and Businesses

    The 14th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights will take place on 18-20 November 2014 in Hanoi, Viet Nam, on the topic “Human Rights and Businesses”. Over 100 civil society and government representatives, from across Asia and Europe are expected to participate in the 3-day Seminar. Discussions will focus on 4 key aspects of the debate, namely the State duty to protect human rights against violations by businesses; Corporate responsibility and its contribution to human rights implementation; Monitoring, reporting and access to remedies; and Multi-stakeholder cooperation.

    Key messages from the Seminar will be shared with ASEM governments and civil society. The Seminar report, once prepared, will also be available for download. Information about the 14th Informal ASEM Seminar can be found here.

  • Human Rights Steering Committee Meeting

    The Steering Committee of the Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights series met on 24 January 2014 at the ASEF premises. The committee confirmed that the 14th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam on the topic of Human Rights and Businesses in the last quarter of 2014. The Seminar dates will be announced on the ASEF website shortly.

    The 14th Seminar will be organised by ASEF, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs. It will be hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
