  • Five awardees of the Asia-Europe Short Films Contest, Mr Pedro Resende from Portugal, Ms Ibtisem Ben Nassib from Malaysia, Mr Lorenzo Ciani from Italy, Mr Riyanto Lesmana and Mr David Saputro Sugianto from Indonesia participated in the international filmmaking workshop at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia (17-18 May 2012). This workshop was part of their winning prize.

During this two-day hands-on programme, these young filmmakers learnt to write film scripts, directed scenes, worked with actors, developed editing skills and got familiar with tips on camera and lighting.

One of the most stimulating experiences for them was shooting their directed scenes with the 35mm camera. “I have never shot in 35mm before that is why it was an interesting and impressive experience,” shared Pedro Resende, whose short film won the ASEM prize of SGD 5,000. Ibtisem Nassib seconded him saying, “When I was directing it was a whole new experience which I thoroughly enjoyed. I usually take a simple camera and play around with it. This workshop gave me a new perspective on the dynamics of images, how to frame them and to put in an emotional key which attracts your audience’ interest.”

All awardees received their trophies from Mr Goh Chok Tong, the Former Prime Minister and currently the Emeritus Senior Minister of Singapore. The Award Ceremony took place on 17 May 2012 commemorating the ASEF’s 15th Anniversary. “The ceremony was the most exciting moment during my stay in Singapore – beautiful venue of the National Library Singapore, interesting high profile people and receiving the award on stage from the Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong,” said Riyanto Lesmana.
