ASEF supports a literary translation workshop in Indonesia

Creative Encounters - Second Edition (2012-13)

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) will support  Towards an Indonesian Literary Translation Centre  a workshop taking place between 22-28 September 2013 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is a follow-up to ASEF’s previous activities in the field of literature, which took place between 2002 and 2004.

Towards an Indonesian Literary Translation Centre is a series of intensive translation workshops for authors and emerging or mid-career translators that are designed to enhance the level of translation skills in Chinese, Indonesian, English and German. The initiative will conclude with a public reading of the translated works and will later focus on its larger goal to set up Indonesia’s first translation centre.

Translation works enable people to engage with stories from around the world, however many challenges hinder the production of high-quality translation due to a lack of qualified professionals, lack of experience, low compensation, low visibility and appreciation, as well as limited exposure.

Translators’ houses and residencies are well-established concepts in Europe compared to Asia. Good practice models will be used to define the aims and objectives of this workshop.

This initiative is supported through ASEF’s programme Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe.  It is conceptualised and organised by  Paper Republic (China), Inisiatif (Indonesia), British Centre for Literary Translation (United Kingdom.)
