The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) participated in the 6th General Conference of ASEMUS held at Weltmuseum Wien, in Vienna, Austria, between 24 and 27 September 2014. The event gathered approximately 90 participants from over 20 countries, providing an excellent opportunity for the ASEMUS community to discuss developments within the museum sector and the network.

Under the theme Exploring Borders: Current Practice and Future Prospects for Co-operation between Asian and European Museums, this year’s General Conference explored current practices and future prospects for co-operation between Asian and European museums.

Curators, educators and conservators presented their topics which address issues based on their practical experience, within the context of museum cooperation between Asia and Europe.

Project Updates

  • The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) would like to congratulate the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) and Weltmuseum Wien for the successful organisation of the 6th ASEMUS General Conference at Weltmuseum Wien on 24-27 September 2014, in Vienna, Austria. The conference is organised under the theme of “Exploring Borders”.

    During the Executive Committee Meeting, A new Executive Committee was elected, with Fionnuala Croke (Director, Chester Beatty Library, Ireland) as Chair and Alan Chong (Director, Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum, Singapore) as Vice-Chair. ASEF and ASEMUS also warmly welcome the new Executive Committee member, Dr Venu Vasudevan (Director General, National Museum of India).

    The next ASEMUS Executive Committee Meeting will be held in Singapore in 2015.

  • The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is delighted and honoured to support the 6th General Conference of the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) at the Weltmuseum in Vienna. We invite you to join us in Vienna to exchange ideas between museum professions from Asia and Europe on the theme of “Exploring Borders”.

    In the special plenary session titled ‘The Post-Colonial Museum : Vision and Trends in Asia and Europe’, ASEF is proud to support prominent keynote speakers;  Prof. Amareswar Galla, Executive Director of the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum (Denmark) will speak about ‘Inclusive Leadership’, Yasmin Khan, Independent Cultural Advisor (United Kingdom) will speak about ‘Gender and Diversity: Museums as Meeting Points of Intersectionality’ and Prof Hong-Bin Kang, Director History Museum of Seoul (Republic of Korea) will speak about  ‘Empathy with the Unexperienced: City Museums for Living Together Differently’. ASEF also invite Dr. Venu Vasudevan, Director General, National Museum of India as a discussant to this panel. Ms. Fionnuala Croke, New ASEMUS Chair (2015-2017), Director, Chester Beatty Library (Republic of Ireland) will moderate the session.

  • The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) in partnership with the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) and Weltmuseum Wien is organising the 6th ASEMUS General Conference on 24-27 September 2014, in Vienna, Austria. The theme of the conference is “Exploring Borders”.

    The event welcomes papers to explore current practice and future prospects for cooperation between Asian and European Museums. Curators, educators and conservators are invited to present topics, which address issues based on their practical experience within the context of Asia-Europe museum cooperation.

    On this occasion, ASEF will host a special panel "The Post-Colonial Museum: Vision and Trends in Asia and Europeon 26 September 2014. The panel will address trends, good practices and challenges in museum practice that navigate ‘borders’ of various sorts, be it national boundaries or disciplinary limitations with a focus on Asian and European museums. Professor Amareswar GALLA, Executive Director of the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum in Denmark and Professor Hong-Bin KANG, Director of the History Museum of Seoul in Korea are among the keynote speakers of this panel.

    As patron of the ASEMUS Network since its inception in 2000, ASEF will attend the ASEMUS Executive Committee Meeting, to be held on 25 September alongside the General Conference.
