Mobility First! ASEF Cultural Mobility Initiative 2017

Project Period: Contact: Department: Programme: Theme:
06 April to 15 September 2017 Fatima AVILA Culture Department ASEF Cultural Mobility Initiative Culture

Venue:
Various ASEM countries

Cultural mobility, whether for work, co-production or participation in a seminar or residency, is integral to the practice and career of artists and cultural professionals in Asia and Europe. However, securing funding to finance international travel (for touring shows, residencies, exploratory visits, collaborations etc.) remains a major challenge for most artists, particularly in the Asia-Asia and Asia-Europe contexts. In particular, ensuring balanced bi-directional (i. e travel from Asia to Europe as well as from Europe to Asia) and reciprocal (i.e. adequate funding for incoming and outgoing mobility) mobility remains a challenge.

It is in this context that the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is launching Mobility First!, a new fund to support the travel of Asian and European artists and cultural professionals between Asia and Europe. Mobility First! – ASEF Cultural Mobility Initiative is being launched in April 2017 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of ASEF, which was established in 1997 as the only institution of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

We invite applications from individuals and arts organisations at least 10 weeks in advance of the event for which mobility support is being sought. Selection is through competitive open calls – please refer to the documents section of this page for the Call.

Update: The application process is on a rolling basis. We will be announcing a total of up to 10 selected artists, cultural professionals, & organisations every first week of the month from May until October 2017 (6 rounds). The first round will be announced on this page on 06 May 2017.

The deadline for 2017 applications is 15 September 2017.

We look forward to your applications!

    Published on 28 Apr 2017

To commemorate its 20th anniversary, the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) recently launched the Mobility First! ASEF Cultural Mobility Initiative, a new fund that supports the movement of Asian and European artists and cultural professionals in Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) partner countries.

The 19th edition of the Far East Film Festival (FEFF) on 20-30 April, in Udine, Italy, is among the first projects to be supported. Regarded as one of the most important festivals of Asian cinema, it is managed by Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche (CEC), a cultural association supported by the Italian Government, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, and Udine Provincial and Municipal Authorities.

This year, the FEFF will host the 3rd edition of the Far East Film Campus, a writing and editorial workshop for young aspiring film journalists. ASEF will support the mobility of Megumi ARITA (Japan), Maja KORBECKA (Poland), Joshua LIM (Malaysia), and Paige LIM (Singapore) to attend the Campus.

By enabling the mobility of selected participants to the FEFF, ASEF continues its support for capacity building for young film professionals.

In partnership with the National Museum – New Delhi (India), the National Museum Institute (India), & the Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS), ASEF has funded the mobility of 6 heritage experts to speak at panel discussions & 3 young museum professionals to attend trainings at the conference.

By enabling the mobility of the selected experts & participants to the ASEMUS General Conference, ASEF continues its long tradition of promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of Asia and Europe through collaborative museum-based cultural activities.
