WHAT IS
#ASEFYLS3
? 
 

Since the inaugural edition of the ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS), the forum has invited over 200 students and young professionals from all 51 ASEM partner countries. In 2018, the programme returned to the heartbeat of its existence: to understand, define and develop leadership among young people – by young people.

The 3rd ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS3) was dedicated to the topic of Ethical Leadership. The forum investigated 3 critical levels of leadership, namely:

You: Self-leadership
We: Team leadership
All: Societal leadership

These 3 levels were at the core of the conversations, action-planning, learning experiences and networking of ASEFYLS3, all integrated in the 10-angle focus of the topic:

1. Culture
2. Economy and Finance
3. Education
4. Environment
5. Family
6. Media
7. Politics
8. Religion and Spirituality
9. Science and Technology
10. Sports

ASEFYLS3 adapted a 360° approach to leadership that recognised the very act of leading to be present across all spectrums of society—from home, to the classroom, in a business meeting to the streets. ASEFYLS3 brought together young people who were willing to critically reflect, re-imagine and shape the notion of leadership — starting from themselves, within their communities and on an Asia-Europe scale.

The 3rd edition of ASEFYLS moved beyond the conference borders. The participants of ASEFYLS3 joined a 5-step programme:

This year we made the webinars open for the whole ASEFEdu community –  Streamed on our ASEFEdu Facebook page .

The core element of ASEFYLS3 was for the participants to develop ideas, projects and commitments in the form of spin-off activities linked to leadership and sustainable development in local communities and collaboratively with the ASEFYLS3 peers. In accorance with this, there were 4 spin-off proposals developed by participants from various thematic groups.

Networks triggered movements! ASEFYLS3 had enhanced its networking element amongst the participants, speakers, facilitators and partners. 

#leadership_exchange
ASEFYLS has always been in close proximity to the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) political process. ASEFYLS3 aligned with the 12th ASEM Summit (ASEM12), where the youth voice and commitments were voiced out at Opening Ceremony of ASEM12.

#reciprocity_focused
ASEFYLS3 promoted the leadership of paying forward. ASEFYLS3 alumni are being supported in rolling out ideas and initiatives to spread their talent and work beyond the ASEFYLS framework.

Project Updates

  • International Seminar on Human Rights of Children and Young People

     

    This international seminar aims to bring together students and young professionals working in the area of human rights of children and young people.

    Using the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) as an over-arching framework, our expert facilitators will conduct interactive and engaging sessions focusing on the implications of the CRC on the professional practise and policy-making.

    The Program

    For an enriching learning experience the International Seminar is designed to cover he following topics:

    Introduction

    • An overview of the UNCRC

    Participation of children and young people

    • The importance of listening to children and young people

    Care and protection of children and young people

    • Abuse and neglectTrauma informed practices

    Children and young people in contact with the youth justice system

    • Diversion and rehabilitation
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people

    Moving forward

    • Translating principles into practice

    To guide you on your career journey, there will be a panel with successful young professionals working in the field of human rights of children and young people. This interactive session will present an opportunity for you to ask career-related questions and engage in discussions with young practitioners.

    The facilitators

    Dr Razwana Begum, Singapore
    Razwana currently holds a position of a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the Singapore University of Social Sciences and has 20 years of experience in the social services sector. Razwana started her career as a Social Worker before joining the Ministry of Social and Family Development in Singapore as a Probation Officer. She holds a degree in law, and completed her graduate studies in social work, criminology and counselling. Razwana received her PhD from Monash University for her work on restorative justice. Her research interests include children and young people, criminality, restorative justice and social work leadership.

    Alasdair Roy OAM, Australia
    Alasdair is a Canberra based Consultant Psychologist with 30 years of experience working with children and young people. Between 2008 and 2016, he was the Children and Young People Commissioner, in the ACT Human Rights Commission. In 2016, Alasdair was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his service to children and young people. In 2017, Alasdair established DelRoy Consulting, which provides specialist advice with respect to creating Child Safe and Child Friendly organisations. Alasdair’s areas of expertise include consulting with children and young people, and service delivery for children and young people in the care and protection, youth justice, and mental health systems.

    Eligibility criteria

    The International Seminar is open to young professionals and students between 18-30 years of age: - Young professionals working in the field of human rights of children and young people; or - Students from diverse fields of studies, pursuing degrees related to the human rights of children and young people or those interested in the area. Places are limited and will be allocated to suitable applicants based on merit. For a complete learning experience, participants are required to attend both days of the event.

    Expenditures

    The participation in the International Seminar is free of charge for selected participants. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided on both days.

    Participants are required to cover all other expenses, including any travel and/or accommodation expenses.

    The third edition of the ASEM Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS), themed on 'Ethical Leadership' gathered 120 participants from 51 ASEM partner countries in Brussels from 15 – 19 October 2018. Held in conjunction with 12th ASEM Summit (ASEM12), participants collectively investigated three critical levels of leadership, namely: self-leadership (you), team leadership (we), and societal leadership (all), and the role of ethics in these leadership levels, through a series of discussions, workshops and planning sessions.

    The participants were divided into 10 thematic groups during the preparatory phase and had to present their ideas for a spin-off activity they wished to conduct once the summit has been concluded, the winning team being provided with a grant from the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).

    Besides the young leaders, the forum also witnessed leaders from politics, business and civil society joining as speakers, panellists and facilitators. Key elements of the programme included the dinner hosted by Their Majesties the King and the Queen of Belgium for 31 selected participants as well as frequent interactions between ASEM senior and junior leaders, resulting in an approximate total of 15 meetings. The 3rd ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS3) concluded with two participants presenting a collective youth intervention at the opening plenary of the 12th ASEM Summit (ASEM12), in the presence of leaders from 51 Asian and European Countries, the EU and the ASEAN, further echoing ASEFEdu's work in bringing the youth voice into the ASEM Process.
