European Festivals Association (EFA)

The European Festivals Association (EFA) is the umbrella organisation for festivals across Europe and beyond. One of the oldest cultural networks in Europe, it was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1952 as a joint initiative of the eminent conductor Igor Markevitch and the great philosopher Denis de Rougemont. Since its foundation, the Association has grown from 15 festivals into a dynamic network representing more than 100 music, dance, theatre and multidisciplinary festivals, national festival associations and cultural organisations from 44 countries. Beyond its membership, EFA collaborates with festival organisations in Asia, in the Arab world, in Africa and further afield. EFA promotes festivals’ significance and their important role in international cultural cooperation and societies today. In all activities, artistic excellence and internationalisation are core objectives of EFA putting EFA in line with the key objective of the major arts festivals across the globe. EFA initiates and implements a wide array of activities – from communication to training, knowledge sharing and advocacy – such as The Festival Academy, the Atelier for Young Festival Managers, the EFA BOOKS series, and the European House for Culture
