How do Higher Education Policies and Higher Education Institutions (HEI) across Asia and Europe engage with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
On 29 November 2022, ASEF’s Education Department organised a virtual roundtable dialogue to present the initial findings of the 9th ASEF Regional Conference on Higher Education (ARC9) – ASEM Higher Education Mapping: Towards Sustainable Development – with over 100 online participants from across Asia and Europe. Two studies have been conducted, specifically on:
Higher Education Policy Perspectives on the SDGs
This study maps the higher education policies advancing sustainable development in ASEM partner countries. An interregional survey and a series of focus group discussions were undertaken with policymakers and ministries of education from over 20 countries in Asia and Europe.
Higher Education Institutional Perspectives on the SDGs
This study is conducted in partnership with the International Association of Universities (IAU) as part of the third iteration of the IAU Global Survey on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD). 240 responses were gathered from 42 ASEM countries to investigate the scope, depth, and breadth of engagement by ASEM HEIs with the SDGs.
Presenting the ARC9 Studies were Dr Miguel Antonio Lim from The University of Manchester and Dr Doria Abdullah from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Joining the dialogue as Discussants were Professor N.V. Varghese, Vice Chancellor of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), India, and Dr Fabrizio Trifirò, Head of Quality Benchmark Services at UK-ENIC.
The ARC9 Research Team includes Dr Icy Fresno Anabo, Ph.D. from the Universidad de Deusto and Dr Anumoni Joshi from RMIT University and Dr Miguel Lim and Dr Doria Abdullah, supported by Reka Tozsa, Acting Director of the ASEF Education Department and Miguel Pangalangan, Project Executive for Higher Education at the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).
More comprehensive coverage of the findings and additional insights will be included in the final version of the studies, which will be launched in early 2023. Stay tuned to receive updates on the launch and forthcoming policy dialogues!
