‘Peace and prosperity are undeniably intertwined’ – this topic was the focus of the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM9) Summit, held in November 2012 in Vientiane, Laos. Although many challenges remain when it comes to security and conflict prevention in Asia and Europe, much progress could be made if the two continents increase their cooperation with one another. This cooperation could help to redefine each region’s concept of security, promote greater regionalism to counter the impact of an increased focus on national interests, and could strive for the establishment of multi-stakeholder infrastructures for peace.
Such insights on security, conflict prevention and inter-regionalism are discussed in length in the paper, ’Security and Conflict in Asia and Europe’, written by Ms Marte HELLEMA, Regional Co-ordinator – Asia-Pacific, Global Secretariat of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC). This paper is part of the ASEM Outlook 2012 Insights series, jointly produced by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).
