The Government of Japan continues to donate personal protective equipment (PPE) to China and other ASEM Partners as part of their efforts to assist in the global outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

5,220 safety goggles and 5,000 isolation suits were released from the ASEM Stockpile of Anti-viral Drugs and Personal Protective Equipment stored in Singapore to the Government of Japan, who transported the equipment to the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport on 17 February 2020.

The equipment provided was in addition to the first batch of PPE released on 7 February 2020.

In addition, PPE which includes 9,360 isolation gowns, 480 alcohol hand rubs, 540 safety goggles, and 24,400 gloves will be given to Cambodia and the Philippines individually. Another 4,680 isolation gowns, 240 alcohol hand rubs, 270 safety goggles, and 12,200 gloves, etc. will be given to both Lao PDR and Mongolia individually.

This in-kind contribution will be transferred to each country from the stockpile in Singapore and will be carried out in coordination with the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Western Pacific (WHO-WPRO).

The stockpile is part of the ASEM Initiative for the Rapid Containment of Pandemic Influenza funded by the Government of Japan. The initiative was launched in 2009 after ASEM Leaders stated their determination to combat a possible human influenza pandemic at the 7th ASEM Summit.

It also comprises the ASEF Public Health Network, which is one of the major projects at ASEF. The activities by the ASEF Public Health Network compliments the stockpile initiative, and its mission is to increase ASEM Partners’ capacity to fight against emerging infectious diseases across Asia and Europe, including pandemic influenza.
