Pointe to Point, 3rd Asia-Europe Dance Forum

Culture Education Events

Project Period:
06 Sep 2005 - 13 Sep 2005
Tokyo (Japan)

The 3rd Asia-Europe Dance Forum, `Pointe to Point’, was held from 6th-13th September, 2005 in Tokyo, Japan. The Thinking behind the programme branding Pointe to Point is to emphasise the significance of dance as a medium of communication that reflects constantly changing society, thus, raising and articulating issues to encourage cultural dialogue and exchange. Pointe to Point is committed to providing young people a process-oriented platform for creative exchange and dialogue through dance.

For 2005’s Pointe to Point, 22 young artists from 16 countries; Cambodia, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Thailand dealt with the theme, ”localism” to explore the amalgamation of dance and new media. Each one presented his/her own realities and situation addressing what it meant to be local, employing areas in contemporary dance and through collaborative artistic expression with space design, sound and lighting technology, and interactive photography installation.

The collaboration towards the creation of media and bodily movements was facilitated by Naoto lina (founding director of Dance and Media Japan and dance curator for Pointe to Point), together with Japanese choreographer Anna, German media team; Walkscreen, and Japan’s RE (Responsive Environment).

ASEF worked in Partnership with Dance and Media Japan (DMJ) and the Tokyo Performing Arts Markets (TPAM) to realise this project.

Pointe to Point was funded through the European Commission’s programme 2005 EU-Japan Year of People-to-People Exchange with support from the following institutions: Goethe Institute-Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Japan Foundation.

Highlights of the project are featured in a publication and video produced by ASEF and the Japan Foundation.

Donna Miranda (Philippines) “Coming home was a bit emotional for me, I wanted to savor the experience and didn’t want to write about being far away from you all. I had the best experience in Tokyo, being in this unrecognisable space, trying to fit in and walking on the left side of the road, reading unrecognisable signs, everything was so different but I liked it. I liked it best because I spent these times with you and working with you. Thank you for sharing your life, passion and dedication to the art with me, Thank you for your generosity.”

“I’m back in Indonesia, the super-hot Jakarta, back to my daily life. Kind of settled again already. I haven’t really. Trying to think of what the forum was for me, or how it affected me, but… Come to think of how I feel right now after the exchange workshop? It has changed me for sure. In what way I don’t know. In all way I guess: me as a person, and me as a dancer, Although we probably think that ‘one person is a dancer and one dancer is a person.’ But as for now, I do feel the separation between them, in a good way though.

And, as I was saying, this forum changed the whole me, not just pieces of me. Which direction will lead me, who knows? Meeting all of you, being with all of you. I feel like I’m taking bits of everyone home. Which made me richer somehow but also confused in a way. I don’t know how you all feel, but this was my first experience. So, I really took in everything without giving myself any boundaries. It’s up to me now to balance it. But for this, what I’m feeling now, what I am now. I want to thank each of you for un-consciously filling me up with whatever there is.”
