In partnership with the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship (SESS), and with support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sweden, and the Ministry of Education and Research, Sweden, ASEF organised an Experts' Meeting on Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment. Under the topic  "Re-engineering Tactics for Asia & Europe", this gathering of Experts was designed to facilitate cooperation in sharing good practices and to explore existing and emerging efforts related to youth employment and entrepreneurship. The Experts’ Meeting brought together 5 sectors, namely social enterprises, corporations, policies, education, and the start-up scene, to jointly provide a more holistic understanding of entrepreneurship and its role in promoting youth employment in the regions.

The Experts' Meeting began with snapshot presentations on entrepreneurship reflecting the current and trending activities in Asia and Europe. The participating Experts’ also worked together in outlining a strategic proposal of how entrepreneurship and youth employment can be promoted on an Asia-Europe level. The meeting was wrapped up with a site visit to the co-working space Start-Up People 45 (SUP46), to learn more about the local tech-scene.

The Experts are currently developing co-written essays, which will result in an e-Publication that will be published in September 2015.

The products of the meeting will then be channelled into the following:

  • Upcoming ASEF Projects on Youth Employment
  • The 1st ASEF Young Leaders' Summit on Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment as preparatory content
  • ASEM Ministries of Education, Foreign Affairs, and Labour/Employment as analysis and reference material

Project Updates

  • The recent ASEF ExpertsMeeting on Re-engineering Tactics for Youth Employment from 29 June to 1 July 2015 was very timely. To facilitate cooperation and identify possible solutions for Asia and Europe, the meeting brought together experts from leading institutions and organisations which represented the 5 following sectors: education, policy, social enterprises, corporations and start-ups. One major focus of the discussions was on a more holistic understanding of social entrepreneurship and its role in promoting youth employment in both regions.

The meeting also kick-started ASEF’s long-term engagement and commitment to tackle youth unemployment in ASEM countries and to equip young people with necessary soft skills, leadership and entrepreneurship competences.

Results of the meeting, including an e-publication on case studies and best practices, will feed into the preparation of the ASEF Young Leaders' Summit on Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment, which will take place inNovember 2015 in Luxemburg.

  • Eentrepreneurship is increasingly attractive as a career option for many young people across Asia and Europe. The idea is also capturing the attention of governments and corporations for a more holistic take on job creation. Together with the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship (SESS), ASEF will organise the ASEF Experts’ Meeting on “Social Entrepreneurship in Asia and Europe: Re-engineering Tactics on Youth Employment” from 29 June to 1 July 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden. The participants will explore, map and discuss possible synergies and pending needs in entrepreneurship and youth employment from 5 perspectives:

    1. How social enterprises work to instil employability skills among youth and which milestones are still ahead
    2. How corporations address youth employment and which supporting mechanisms still need to be developed
    3. How policies are formulated to stimulate youth employment and which gaps still need to be addressed
    4. How education fosters entrepreneurship across all walks of life and the challenges faced in modelling a curriculum that encompasses industry requirements, and
    5. How the start-up scene vitalises job-creation and could overcome the challenge of scaling growth

As part of ASEF’s education programme portfolio, the Experts’ Meeting will also kick-start a long-term engagement and facilitate cooperation among Asian and European organisations to work on entrepreneurship and youth employment. Furthermore, the outcome will feed into the 1st ASEF Young Leaders’ Summit on Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment, which will take place on 1-5 November 2015 in conjunction with the 12th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM FMM12) in Luxembourg.
