Sustainable Development in a post-COVID-19 world

Project Period: Contact: Department: Programme: Theme:
February - June 2021 Freya CHOW-PAUL Education Department ASEF Young Leaders Summit Education

Virtual, Cambodia & ASEM Countries

The ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS) is a go-to place for Asian and European young professionals and students to unlearn and re-learn new conceptsstrategies and actions on how to create sustainable impact in society.

ASEFYLS is an experiential platform which adapts a 360° approach on leadership development. The project recognises that leadership takes place across all spectrums in society: at home, in lecture halls, board roomspolitical plenaries, within the community and on the streets. Leadership is for those who are determined to take a leap by asking questions, thinking critically, collaborating and planning actions.

The ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS) is the official youth event back-to-back with ASEM Summits, where the Leaders from the 51 ASEM Partner countries, the EU and the ASEAN Secretariat discuss the status and future of Asia-Europe relations.

ASEFYLS is unique because it leads to:

1. Development of fresh and rewarding insights, and equips recognised and unsung young leaders with a tool-kit for action

2.  Joint learning and sharing of time, talent and resources for greater impact beyond the ASEFYLS framework

3. Co-creation and commitments to 'Leadership in Action' activities linked to sustainable development in local communities

4. Space for networking among youth, community leaders, business leaders, thought-provoking academics and policy-makers

5. Opportunity for participation of ASEFYLS participants at the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit and relevant ASEM Ministerial Meetings and to engage in Junior-Senior dialogues with ASEM Leaders and officials

Upcoming Edition:

The 4th ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS4) is a series of virtual events, online trainings, as well as face-to-face meetings that stretch over the period of 5 months. The project focuses on Youth Leadership in the context of self, team and societal leadership for taking action towards ‘Sustainable Development in a post-COVID-19 world’.

ASEFYLS4 is designed to instil a spirit of curiosity, bravery and will-power among young people, starting with an Asia-Europe-wide Open Call addressed to youth from the 51 ASEM countries who can take over leadership roles and drive community activities linked to SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth) and SDG13 (Climate Action).

The project includes:

  • a leadership course with certification led by an Asian/European university,
  • virtual knowledge building and collaboration for the up to 120 participants, including dialogues with ASEM leaders,
  • a virtual conference alongside the 13th ASEM Summit (ASEM13) with further possibility to engage online with political leaders from Asia & Europe.

A selected group of participants will also have the opportunity to travel to Cambodia and deliver the ASEM Youth Declaration at ASEM13*. ASEFYLS4 will also support 16 concrete ‘Leadership in Action’ activities implemented by youth in their local communities (each with a duration of ca. 6 months).

*This will depend on the public health & safety measures by Governments and ongoing travel guidelines.
