Creating an Asia-Europe strategic partnership for conflict transformation

8th Asia-Europe Roundtable

Highlights:

The Asia-Europe Roundtable on Conflict Management (AER) examines policy dialogues on conflict management issues within the framework of Asia-Europe relations. Since its inception in 2000, the AER has covered the entire conflict cycle – from conflict prevention, through to post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation. It has generated policy insights and content, which is accessible to policy-planners across different sectors.

In the efforts to improve bi-regional collaboration in conflict management, strategic foresight is a vital policy analysis tool in evaluating those decisions that are required now, to ensure regional stability and security in the future. The 8th Asia-Europe Roundtable on Conflict Management: “The Future of an Asia-Europe Strategic Partnership on Conflict Transformation,” is a unique opportunity to enhance regional conflict transformation and security structures in Asia and Europe and develop various Asia-Europe strategic partnership models.

Towards a multi-sector strategic partnership

Previous Roundtable discussions established a consensus on the value of developing and deepening Asia-Europe partnership to address challenges to peace and security. To address the complexity involved in building an inclusive, multi-sector strategic partnership on conflict transformation, the 8th Asia-Europe Roundtable will deploy a scenario-building and strategy formulation exercise to develop different scenarios and possible models of cooperation between Asia and Europe in the area of peace and security. This will enable relevant regional actors to implement the knowledge and action plans generated by the event.

Participants in the Roundtable are key stakeholders from Asia and Europe – experts in conflict management, academics, intergovernment and government representatives, business people and the media. The workshop will take place from 23 to 25 May 2011 in Bali, Indonesia.

This event is organised in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Office for Regional Cooperation in Asia (FES) and the Singapore Institute for International Affairs (SIIA), with the support of the Europe-Asia Policy Forum.
