Measuring Sustainability

ENVforum Conference: 29 – 30 September 2014

It is not possible to measure the well-being of people and environment by only measuring the GDP. To get a more comprehensive picture, a new study prepared by the Asia-Europe Environment Forum (ENVforum) offers a choice of indicators that capture sustainable development.

This illustrative set of indicators for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will build upon the Millennium Development Goals and converge with the post-2015 development agenda, was prepared by an international research team led by Professor Laszlo PINTER from the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary.

The report, Sustainable Development Goals and Indicators for a Small Planet - Part II: Measuring Sustainability is the second in a 3-part series. It complements the first publication which focused on Methodology and Goal Framework. Part II is designed as a tool for government officials to guide the formulation of Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) at a national level. The study is accompanied by an annex containing a methodological description for each indicator proposed in the main report.

The official launch of the study will take place during the ENVforum conference on 29-30 September in Brussels, Belgium. The conference will focus on the means of implementation of SDGs.
