Dr RAJARAM introduced a critical overview of the governance of migrants in a broad global and historical perspective. Migration governance is crucial to nation and state building perspectives. Migrants are often marginalised and excluded. They are also however incorporated into the strategies of the nation-state by their exclusion. The exploration of the way migrants are governed is important for shedding light on the cultural and political boundaries of the nation state.

Dr RAJARAM shared different framings of migrants, looking particularly at the issue of whether and how they are able to claim right. He presented migrants from a transnational migration perspective which has the useful advantage of not reducing migrant subjectivities to their relation with a state. This focus is rather on economic and social networks that transcend the state and lead to different forms of social incorporation.
