Prof. TIGNO attempted to critically interrogate and dissect the nexus between migration and the emergence of multicultural societies. He cited case studies of Australia, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines to illustrate the serious, complex, and dynamic interplay that exists between immigration and multiculturalism. Using these cases, he endeavoured to identify and underscore some of the key issues that are associated with multiculturalism and migration as well as the confluence of factors that may have accounted for their emergence and persistence.

The cases noted that the state plays a significant role in the creation and continuance of serious social, political, and economic issues in selected multicultural societies especially as these relate to immigration and labour migration matters. The cases also argued that the demographic situations in some of the selected cases have actually created conditions conducive to the occurrence of migration and, subsequently, the emergence of multicultural issues and concerns.
