ASEF was absolutely thrilled and honored to be part of the UNESCO Digital Learning Week that took place between 2-5 September in Paris, France, where it proudly presented its pioneering work on building AI competencies among teachers through the ASEFClassNet School Collaboration project. The project’s cross-continental peer-to-peer collaboration framework is the driving force in building capacities among secondary and vocational school teachers across 50 countries in Asia and Europe. By showcasing the innovative framework of the project as a best practice, ASEF played a key role in shaping the ongoing global dialogue on the future of education in the era of AI.

During the event, Jyoti Rahaman (Education Innovation Lead at ASEF’s Education Department) showcased how ASEF empowers teachers across Asia and Europe build AI Competencies for teaching innovatively through her presentation on, “ASEFClassNet School Collaboration: AI Competency Development through Cross-Continental Innovative Teaching practice.”

The presentation highlighted a key outcome: Innovative Teaching Practice, which aligns with UNESCO Digital Learning Week’s goal of advancing cutting-edge educational practices for 21st-century skills. Key points covered during her presentation are:

  1. Peer-to-Peer Knowledge Exchange & Empowerment: We introduced the unique cross-continental peer-to-peer framework central to the ASEFClassNet Teacher Training, which transforms teachers from passive recipients into active participants in a dynamic learning community. Through this ASEFClassNet teachers not only garner knowledge but also foster mutual support and empowerment during and after the training to improve learning environments for their students.
  2. ASEFClassNet Innovative Teaching Practices (ITP): We showcased tangible outcomes from the training, featuring a curated list of Innovative Teaching Practices designed by our participants, demonstrating creative applications of AI and EdTech in classrooms.
  3. Impact: We will discuss the broader impact of the ASEFClassNet Teacher Training, including:
    • Enhancing Teacher Competency: how our teacher participants gain confidence and efficacy after the training in navigating teaching and learning with AI meaningfully, ethically, and safely.
    • Improving Student Outcomes: how students experience engaging learning, leading to higher motivation and better academic performance.
    • Building Sustainable Practices: How the peer-to-peer model perpetuates a cycle of continuous knowledge dissemination and application, fostering a long-lasting impact in our participants’ schools and beyond.

The ASEFClassNet School Collaboration Project marks a significant step toward teacher training to prepare teachers for the era of Artificial Intelligence as proven by our impact – over 70% teachers continuously work together with contacts made to innovate their teaching and learning practices.

A big congratulation to the incredible UNESCO Digital Learning Week Team, and all the brilliant experts who came together to launch the groundbreaking AI Competency Framework for students! You may learn more about the UNESCO AI competency Framework for teachers and students: here.

The ASEF Classroom Network School Collaboration Project (ASEFClassNet), organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), is an 8-month-long innovative teacher training program that empowers secondary and vocational school teachers across 50 countries in Asia and Europe. In 2024, it is currently engaging 255 participants and supporting them to build their capacity on AI&ED.
