ASEFINNOLAB4 AND THE LAUNCH OF THE ASIA AND EUROPE FOR AI (AE4AI) NETWORK
The 4th ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratory (ASEFInnoLab4) was co-organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and Fudan University in Shanghai, China, on 23-28 October 2023. It brought together 20 academics and managers of higher education institutions to discuss how can higher education take action to enhance universities’ role in AI innovation ecosystems. Participants of ASEFInnoLab4 co-created this Joint Statement to highlight areas of importance and to launch the Asia-Europe for Artificial Intelligence (AE4AI) Network to address these areas through a peer-to-peer collaboration.
The ASEFInnoLab4 was designed to facilitate the development of a Joint Statement, with subject matter experts on the topics of AI Governance, AI in Education, and AI for Sustainable Development, delivering presentations during Roundtable Discussions throughout the programme.
Highlighted in the ASEFInnoLab Roundtable Discussions was how “AI technology has recently reached an unprecedented level of capability” bringing with it “benefits, risks, and challenges that have manifested with the transition from Narrow Intelligence to Generative AI”.
The Joint Statement underscores the critical need for robust collaboration among different stakeholders of higher education institutions in Asia and Europe. Collectively, they can become critical hubs of innovation and knowledge centres laying down guiding principles to inform policymakers and build an ecosystem for a future where AI is a force of good for government, businesses, and our societies.

ASIA-EUROPE FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AE4AI) NETWORK
ASEFInnoLab4 brought together 20 University Academics and Senior Administrators from across Asia and Europe to facilitate the collaboration and the promotion of new partnerships. The outcome of this initiative is the launch of the AE4AI Network. This network provided the university academics and senior administrators the opportunity to design innovative and actionable projects aligned with the three subtopics: AI Governance, AI in Education, and AI for Sustainable Development.
