Navigating Wellbeing in the Age of AI
In recent years, digital technology has permeated nearly every aspect of life and has transformed the way people communicate, learn and access information. While the benefits of digital technology are numerous, there are significant challenges that have emerged: issues such as digital addiction, mental health concerns, misinformation, and decline of students’ cognitive and critical thinking skills are among the many. Digital well-being refers to the optimization of online experiences to promote a healthier relationship with technology, safeguard against dangers online and improve overall quality of life.
The rationale for this project stems from the urgent need to address the potential adverse effects of technology use. Current data indicates rising rates of anxiety, depression and stress related to excessive technology use, particularly among younger populations. As a response, it is imperative that we equip them with the skills and insights needed to harness technology positively and sustainably.
This project aims to explore and develop strategies for fostering healthy digital habits, improving digital literacy and creating supportive online social environments.
Overall, the scope of the project includes creative multimedia use to showcase effective strategies for digital well-being; also, workshops proposing online resources and dissemination of findings to the broader community.
Goals
- Enhance Digital Literacy and Safety: Equip students with skills to navigate the digital landscape responsibly. This includes understanding online privacy, recognizing cyberbullying, and knowing how to report harmful content. Students can involve creating prototype informative resources e. g. , video. Alternatively, they can attend a discussion with an expert, or initiate/implement a peer mentorship program to help support one another in safe internet practices.
- Foster Positive Online Interactions: Encourage students to cultivate a supportive and respectful online community. This can be accomplished through activities centred on positive social media behavior, empathy and kindness. Students will participate in a collaborative workshop to promote positivity and highlight the benefits of constructive online communication
- Promote Healthy Digital Habits: Educate students about the importance of balancing their digital usage with offline activities. This goal can be achieved through a workshop that covers topics such as screen time management, the importance of taking breaks, and engaging in physical activities. Students can create personal digital usage plans to help regulate their screen time effectively.
These goals can empower students to be more mindful of their digital presence.
