About the White Papers

The white papers in this collection are the result of a months-long co-creation journey with the 7th ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratory. They bring perspectives across Asia and Europe into a shared inquiry about how universities can use the development of AI to serve the common good.

Our purpose has been to provide strategic insights and actionable pathways for global, national and institutional leaders: a view of the key themes, the dilemmas they expose, and the alternatives through which leaders can respond. The collection invites readers to connect technological possibilities with educational purposes, institutional capabilities, and the people whose lives those choices will affect.

Three Perspectives on AI for Good

zero in on the role of universities in advancing AI for good through three interconnected thematic directions: AI4GlobalGood, AI4PublicInterest, and AI4InstitutionalExcellence. Each offers a different perspective on how universities can shape the development, governance, and use of AI to deliver meaningful benefits for society.

Explores how universities can harness AI to advance sustainability and address shared social, economic, and environmental challenges.

Strengthens public understanding, participation, and trust in AI through inclusive governance and policymaking at national and regional levels.

Builds the governance frameworks, institutional capabilities, and practices that enable universities to adopt and use AI responsibly.

The ASEFInnoLab7 White Paper Collection is the result of an eight-month collaborative journey involving 62 experts, academics, and higher education professionals from 28 countries across Asia and Europe.

Working in nine teams, participants developed their respective white papers through a series of virtual and in-person activities. The journey began just before the Coordinators’ Meeting at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, followed by virtual onboarding sessions and several months of collaborative drafting. The teams then came together at the ASEFInnoLab7 Conference at the University of Nottingham in Nottingham, United Kingdom, to present their work, exchange feedback, and further refine their recommendations.

Following a finalisation period, the nine white papers were brought together into a collection, to be officially launched on 4 November 2026, as part of the International Association of University‘s 17th General Conference at Murdoch University in Australia.

Nine Papers on AI for Good

bring together diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise from higher education professionals across Asia and Europe, which reflects ASEFInnoLab’s commitment to collaborative knowledge creation.

Developed through an extensive co-creation process, each paper is the product of collective discussions, critical reflection, and exchanges among experts working in different institutional, national, and cultural contexts. This diversity allowed teams to challenge assumptions, consider different approaches, and develop recommendations that take into account the varying realities and priorities of higher education institutions.

Together, the nine papers offer strategic insights and actionable recommendations for university leaders and policymakers on how universities can shape AI development and use in ways that serve the common good.

Join the Launch of the ASEFInnoLab7 White Paper Collection

The ASEFInnoLab7 White Paper Collection will be officially launched on 4 November 2026 at Murdoch University, Australia, during the International Association of Universities (IAU) General Conference. The session, titled “What is the Role of Universities in Advancing AI for the Common Good?”, will feature presentations from invited white paper leads, followed by interactive group discussions and a panel exchange. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the papers’ key findings and recommendations, exchange perspectives, and reflect on how universities can translate these insights into meaningful action for the common good.

The seventh edition of the ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratory (ASEFInnoLab7) explores “The Role of Universities in Advancing AI for Good”, bringing together higher education stakeholders from Asia and Europe to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and explore how universities can contribute to the common good through AI.

Beyond the White Paper Lab, ASEFInnoLab7 also featured the Trailblazers Webinar Series, which showcased insights, experiences, and good practices from experts across our network. Interested in learning more? Explore the webinar series and revisit ASEFInnoLab6, last year’s edition, to discover more of our work at the intersection of AI and higher education.

The Trailblazers Webinar Series explored how universities can respond to AI as both a technological and societal transformation. The series featured experts from the ASEFInnoLab community of practice, network of experts, and partner organisations, who shared insights, good practices, and emerging approaches from across Asia and Europe on how universities can leverage AI for the common good.

ASEFInnoLab6 explored the theme “Universities’ Role in Developing Skills for an AI-Powered Future” through an online programme and a three-part conference series held in Shanghai, Manila and Košice. We brought together more than 200 participants at the start of the programme to  explore responsible, inclusive and human-centred approaches to AI in higher education through a holistic journey.

Look out for next year’s edition!

The ASEFInnoLab journey continues next year, bringing new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and fresh perspectives on the evolving role of universities in an AI-driven world.
