The 13th instalment of the ASEF University summer school programme brought together 39 university students from 30 ASEM countries, who were selected for their academic excellence and leadership potential.
Participants attended lectures and workshops as well as cultural and other extracurricular activities. During the lectures, speakers from Asia and Europe explored four main themes:
– The rule of law
– Human rights
– The settlement of disputes and international adjudication
– Governance and accountability: Challenges for the EU
Participants also visited the Peace Palace at The Hague, where they were given a tour of the premises of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and an orientation into the history and work of the Court. In a two-day Moot Court workshop facilitated by the Leiden Faculty of Law, participants developed pleadings on important international disputes to hone their skills in analysis and argumentation.
