Facilitate education collaboration between youth, students, teachers & educators, higher education & EdTech experts with policy makers across Asia and Europe.
Education is one of ASEF’s key thematic areas. In this field, we connect multiple stakeholders across both regions. Through policy dialogues, capacity building and the creation of bi-regional networks, we contribute to innovation in the formal and non-formal education sector and towards the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda2030.
Education projects promote inclusive & equitable access across all education sectors and engage civil society and government stakeholders in interdisciplinary, technology-driven and lifelong learning opportunities to enhance quality education.
Further, we facilitate a structured dialogue between young people and decision-makers. ASEF’s education projects are part of the ASEM Education Process and their outcomes feed into the agenda of the ASEM Education Ministers’ Meetings (ASEMMEs).
The ASEF Classroom Network Project brings together Teachers from Secondary & Vocational Schools for teacher capacity building and collaboration between the 2 regions. The 17th ASEF Classroom Network project titled “Learning about AI & Learning with AI” was a hybrid project that took place both online and on-site in Manila, Philippines throughout 2024. It aimed to engage a diverse group of intergenerational participants to exchange knowledge and come up with innovative projects on using AI in Education – both secondary school teachers, as well as academics from Faculties of Education. In 2025, the 18th ASEF Classroom Network project titled “Effective, Inclusive and Ethical Artificial Intelligence in Education Tools (AIED) Design” continues to engage stakeholders in two tracks: School Collaboration and Faculty Collaboration. Read more about the project here.
The ASEF Regional Conference on Higher Education (ARC) is the Official Dialogue Partner of the ASEM Education Ministers. In 2024, the 10th edition of ARC focused on the topic of “[Un]debated Ways of Rethinking Higher Education” through 4 sub-themes that explore what the ASEM Education Space hopes to achieve by 2030 and beyond where deeper global conversations are needed. Activities included a Debate Webinar Series, Policy Dialogue Sessions and contribution to Policy Events. ARC10 continues in 2025 with further Policy Dialogues. Read more about the project here.
The ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratories (ASEFInnoLab) project series is bringing together university managers to exchange knowledge, good practices and build new networks to take their work to the next level. In 2024, the 5th ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratory took place focusing on “Universities’ Role in AI Innovation Ecosystems”, online and in Shanghai, China. The fifth edition unfolded three subthemes to support universities in positioning themselves in AI Governance, AI in Education, and AI for Sustainable Development.
Our flagship youth project is the ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS), focusing on leadership capacity building and youth collaboration in Asia and Europe. In 2024 we organised two ASEFYLS Capacity Building Trainings focused on the topic of Leadership in Society 5.0. In the coming year, the 6th ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS6) will take place online and in Osaka, Japan, bringing together a new cohort of young leaders. Read more about the project here.
In 2024, we began a brand-new project focused on Science and Technology Diplomacy. This project aims to facilitate intellectual exchange, strengthen networks, and build capacities in young leaders in the field of science and technology diplomacy. Last year we conducted research to map out the different strategies, priorities, policy tools across ASEF member countries. Read more about the report here. Results were presented at the World Science Forum (WSF) in Budapest, Hungary. In the coming year, we will be conducting a Workshop Series spotlighting specific countries in the report, read more about this here.
